The Young Academy Finland membership term lasts four years. Scholars who are under 40 years old and have received their doctorate no more than five years ago can apply for membership. Members must be Finnish citizens or reside in Finland and demonstrate excellence and potential as young scholars in their academic field considering their career stage. While most of our activities are in Finnish, understanding Finnish is not part of our membership criteria. We do, however, appreciate motivation towards learning Finnish and attending our events that are in Finnish. Exceptions to membership criteria can be made for justifiable reasons.

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters chooses new Young Academy Finland members based on recommendations made by invited evaluators and Young Academy Finland is among these evaluators. We seek new members through our membership call that is open yearly during February. In the first stage of the two-stage call, the board of Young Academy Finland evaluates whether the application fulfils basic eligibility criteria. Sufficiently accomplished applicants will be further evaluated with emphasis on motivation. Demonstrating enthusiasm towards active participation in Young Academy Finland’s events, action task groups, and acting as a representative will be evaluated positively. Approximately ten to fifteen applicants are interviewed, and eight are recommended to the board of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. Based on recommendations, the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters chooses approximately twenty new members.

Recommendations are meant to ensure that our membership includes various fields of science and particularly fields that are not yet represented.
