Suvi Savinen

I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Eastern Finland and a clinical psychologist by training. My research focuses on understanding the causes, consequences, and treatment of mental disorders, with a particular interest in improving psychological treatments and interventions for children and young people. My methodological expertise lies in the use of nationwide register data and quasi-experimental study designs to investigate causal questions in mental health and related areas. I have conducted research spanning across multiple scientific disciplines, including psychology, psychiatric epidemiology, substance use, and criminology. My current work increasingly combines causal inference with machine learning to investigate treatment-effect heterogeneity, with the ultimate goal of developing more individualized approaches to psychological treatment. I have received interdisciplinary training which also includes qualitative and mixed-methods research, reflecting my interest in not only whether new approaches work, but also how they can be meaningfully implemented in clinical practice. In addition to research and teaching, I also treat patients in clinical practice.
