Vuokko Heikinheimo

My background is in geography with a specialization in geographic information science. I am interested in advancing and applying spatial analysis methods to solving the ongoing sustainability challenges, especially from the point of view of urban planning.

In my research, I have studied land use/land cover changes and carbon stocks using remote sensing data, geographic accessibility using transport network data, and people’s movement using mobile data sources. In my doctoral dissertation, I studied how user-generated geographic information, such as social media and sports application data, can be used for understanding visits to green spaces.

Alongside research, I am interested in open (spatial) data, as well as crowdsourcing, especially concerning the OpenStreetMap project.

I graduated as a doctor of philosophy from the University of Helsinki in 2021. I have worked in several teaching and research positions in the Digital Geography Lab research group at the University of Helsinki. I am currently a senior researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute in research and expert projects related to urban sustainability.
