International networks

International cooperation is a central part of the operations of Young Academy Finland. This page lists our memberships in international organisations and networks that Young Academy Finland collaborates with.

ALLEA All European Academies / European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities

Established in 1994. Members include 60 academies from 40 EU and non-EU countries. ALLEA advances the role of science as a global public good and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among its member academies and other actors in Europe and globally. ALLEA offers a forum for scientific exchange across borders, benefiting the research community, and provides scientific expertise for policymakers, media and the public.

Young academies have been included in the membership since 2020.

YAF has been a member since 2025.

COFA The Council of Finnish Academies

The Council of Finnish Academies is a co-operative body of four national academies. The council represents the Finnish science academies in international science organizations and promotes the international visibility of Finnish science. The council promotes the use of scientific knowledge in decision making and appoints experts from Finland to the governing boards and working groups of international science organizations and supports the work of selected representatives.

The council supports YAF financially by directing a part of the council’s state subsidies to its international activities yearly.

ENYA European Network of Young Academies

A network of 23 young academies based in Europe and first assembled in 2019. The annual ENYA meetings include seminars, discussions, and presentations on topical issues. Information about the meetings is available on GYA’s and ALLEA’s websites.

Participation in the ENYA meetings is open to young academy delegates selected by their academy (up to 2 members and 1 staff member per young academy).

YAF delegates actively participate in ENYA meetings.

 

EYAS Estonian Young Academy of Sciences

Established in 2017. EYAS is an independent organisation representing the voices and interests of young scientists and scholars in Estonia aiming to contribute towards the development of research and betterment of society.

YAF actively collaborates with EYAS and the academies meet annually.

GYA Global Young Academy

Established in 2010. Members and alumni represent over 100 countries across six continents. GYA connects individual young scholars and young academies and brings the voice of young scientists into evidence-informed and inclusive global, regional and national decision making. GYA members engage in working groups, strategic projects and collaborations with international partner organisations. GYA facilitates regular worldwide meetings of national young academies.

Individual scholars can apply for membership yearly.

YAF is one of the national young academies that cooperate with GYA and participate in GYA events.

ISC

Established in 2018 after the merger of the International Council for Science, which was founded in 1931, and the International Social Science Council, founded in 1952. The ISC is a significant international organization that brings together more than 250 members across the globe ranging from scientific councils and academies to science unions and associations, including ca. 20 young academies. The ISC’s central focus areas include science policy, science diplomacy and freedom of science. The council organizes events and working groups, allowing members to take part in international activities and connect with other member organizations, and also produces publications and other outputs. The ISC seeks to advance the role of science and act as the global voice for science.

YAF became a member in 2025.

Nordic-Baltic Network of Young Academies

A network of Nordic and Baltic young academies established in 2019. In addition to yearly meetings hosted by one of the member academies, where representatives of national young academies convene to foster collaboration and discuss regional and global issues related to science, the network has written joint statements, for example.

YAF is one of the national young academies involved in the network.

Synespod Swiss Young Network for Science Policy and Diplomacy

Established in 2023. The Swiss Young Network for Science Policy and Diplomacy (SYNESPOD) is a platform for science policy and diplomacy and has partnerships with (inter)national institutions. Through international workshops, forums and partnerships, the project aims to increase the impact and visibility of the Swiss Young Academy (SYA) and early-career professionals in addressing sustainable development challenges globally.

YAF is a partner academy.

YAE Young Academy of Europe

Established in 2012. YAE provides advice and feedback on science policy from the perspective of young scholars, promoting evidence-based policy across all European countries. By involving top young scientists in envisioning the future of European research strategy, YAE supports young scientists in Europe in their personal development and in thinking strategically about the future of their own discipline.

Individual scholars can apply for membership all year round by nominating themselves or via nomination by a current member of the YAE, the Academia Europaea, a European National Young Academy (ENYA) or a senior national academy.

YAF collaborates with YAE through the ENYA and YASAS networks and as a partner of GYA.

YASAS Young Academies Science Advice Structure

Established in 2020. YASAS is an independent network of 22 young academies across Europe. It seeks to deepen the exchange between European young academies and strengthen the voice of early- and mid-career researchers in European science policy. YASAS is a member of the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) consortium which is part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism.

YAF is one of the founding young academies behind YASAS.
