He is only in his early 30s, but Prof. Ashish Ganvir is already a rising star in the realms of surface coatings and additive manufacturing. As the co-lead of the vibrant Digital Manufacturing and Surface Engineering (DMS) group at the University of Turku, he guides a team of over 25 researchers in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
Ashish embarked on his academic journey in 2013, earning a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) in Materials Science and Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, India. Following his B. Tech, he ventured to Sweden, where he earned his MSc in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Production Technology, specializing in Surface and Coatings from the University West, Trollhättan.
Post-Ph.D., Ashish continued his research journey with a short postdoc at University West before diving into the industry at GKN Aerospace Sweden AB. For two and a half years (2018-2021), he served as a full-time process engineer in the field of Additive Manufacturing. His global research experience includes being a visiting researcher during his Ph.D. studies at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, and Innovnano materials, Coimbra, Portugal, in 2016. In 2022, he added a feather to his cap as a guest professor at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland.
With over 40 scientific documents published in reputable journals, including Nature, Prof. Ganvir’s groundbreaking work in materials processing, utilizing plasma, flame, and lasers, finds application across diverse domains. He seamlessly integrates his profound materials science education and rich industrial manufacturing experience into his innovative research endeavors.
