Lilli Kaarakka

I am a forest ecologist interested in understanding forest ecosystem function and biogeochemical cycles in forests facing environmental change. My research produces practical, scientific outputs such as management guidelines for stakeholders associated with forestry, including land managers and natural resource professionals. Further, I am interested in understanding the transient-like nature of the forest carbon sink, forest carbon turnover dynamics, legacies of forest soil treatments and disturbances (i.e., fire, drought), and finally – integrating soil carbon into forest management practices and governance. Finally, some of my latest work has focused on understanding the existing carbon offset market in California and which practices are applied in accredited forest offset projects.
